Google has released Android 4.4 KitKat, and there’s a surprise in it for Microsoft – QuickOffice, which lets you edit, read, modify any Microsoft Office documents, for free. From now on, any Android user who upgrades to KitKat will get QuickOffice automatically, and and user of any device that ships with Android 4.4 KitKat already has it.
This is actually a second escalation on Google’s advances against Microsoft – first, they bought QuickOffice, and made it free software. Anyone could download and use it, with Android. However, with incorporating QuickOffice to new Android release, Google basically unleashed a powerful blow against Microsoft – undercutting one of its major revenue streams coming from Microsoft Office products. This is expected to have a huge impact on not only Microsoft’s profits, but also future landscape of office productivity software.
