“Russians are coming !!” …. Joke aside, this may be the reality for at least Microsoft : Russian search engine Yandex (yandex.com) has surpassed Microsoft’s search engine Bing (bing.com) in recent search engine rankings. Currently, Microsoft holds 2.5% of search, Yandex 2.8%. Top dogs are Google with 62%, China’s Baidu with 8.2%, Yahoo with 4.9%.
The interesting catch in statistics is that, Yandex’s search lead on microsoft has been widening since they took over them for the first time last year. Whereas the increase in Yandex usage is mainly believed to be due to internet usage proliferating around russia, the company has also started entering other markets, like Turkey with a turkish version, and english search market with english Yandex. English Yandex was praised by various sources for its accuracy, however it didnt gain much traction, at least yet.
In all respects, this is a good development for internet users, since it will inevitably lead to diversity in search field and lead to more emphasis being put on user satisfaction by all search companies.
