Google is funding Raspberry Pi Foundation to have them distribute 15,000 Raspberry Pi computers around schools in United Kingdom.
The aim of the charitable move is to encourage and inspire future computer scientists, provide children with means to access and use computers in learning process, get them technologically affluent. Google is working with 6 education institutions in the process, while also funding ICT teachers in U.K.
Raspberry Pi is a credit card sized, single circuit board computer with 512 Mb ram and a processor that can be overclocked to 1 Ghz. The board has a gpu unit. It can run daily computer tasks as well as an average computer, has an app store online for downloading apps, has SD card storage for long term storage and booting. It can run linux versions easily. The practical uses for this credit card size computer is many, since it is not only quite small and portable but also offers any everyday function that may be needed – ranging from web surfing to email.
The aim of the foundation is to eventually provide the entire unit for $25-35 price range. However, the foundation started offering the higher price versions for sale since 2012 february. The unit can be found for sale in various channels online, including the foundation itself.
